On Tuesday, all eyes were on the Alabama Senate race. As the votes came in, it was apparent that the race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones would be extremely close.
In the end, Jones took away the victory by only 1.5 percent. The entire campaign gained national attention when Republican candidate Roy Moore was accused of sexual misconduct when he was in his mid-30s.
There was never any proof regarding the allegations, and Moore continuously denied them. Recently, President Trump publicly endorsed Moore. However, that was not enough for the Republican to seal the victory.
Now, a report has emerged about how much Doug Jones spent on his campaign. He was the first Democrat in 25 years to win an Alabama Senate campaign.
Jones reportedly spent nearly $12 million on his campaign funding. This amount is large, especially compared to Moore who only raised around $5 million.
Most of Jones’ funds were given by a super PAC called Highway 31. It is a joint project, combining two large Democratic super PACs including the Senate Majority PAC and Priorities USA Action. Jones also raised almost $4 million from voter contributions.
Roy Moore’s contributions came mostly from a PAC that supports President Trump called America First Action. He also raised money from a law firm called Beasley Allen.
Another donor who supported Moore was the founder of Cinemark Theatres, the owner of the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado where a mass shooting took place in July 2012. Though he had a lot of support from other businesses as well, it came up short. Additionally, Moore only received $77,100 from voter contributions compared to Jones’ $4 million.
According to Newsweek, most of the money went to the Democrat’s campaign after the accusations against Moore became public. Most of the campaign money was spent on commercials and flyers, and the main focus was to target the black vote. That vote became pivotal in his eventual victory.
