On Tuesday, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico City. The earthquake caused a vast amount of devastation across the city. Up to 44 buildings collapsed, one of which was a private elementary school.
The school folded in on itself and resulted in several deaths. As of Wednesday, the death toll from the school was up to 25, all but four being children.
Additionally, dozens of students were missing. Below is a video of two small children who were rescued from the rubble.
While many were rescued, some are still trapped. Now, the race against time is on as there is confirmation of at least one child who is still alive but trapped inside the rubble.
CNN reported early Thursday morning that rescuers have been trying to locate a 12-year-old girl who is trapped beneath the debris. Admiral Jose Luis Vergara said that a rescue mission is currently taking place for this young girl.
He said, “At this moment we know that at least one girl is alive inside.”
On Wednesday afternoon, rescuers made contact with the young girl. Additionally, temperature readings suggested that there may be two others that are still alive and trapped.
Many people are volunteering with the rescue mission and are trying to stay quiet to try to hear voices coming from the rubble. However, the sound of metal and concrete cracking is creating a loud noise.
Still, volunteers and first responders are working together around the clock to rescue those still trapped. One rescuer made a public plea on TV to ask for beams, pulleys, and other rescue materials needed to complete their mission.
Volunteer Ivan Ramos said, “This is the spirit of us, of Mexico. That’s our community in general; it crosses classes- if you are rich or poor- and any other divide.”
