On Tuesday, NFL’s Roger Goodell released a statement that shocked the sports world. In light of all of the recent NFL anthem protests, debates have been rising about whether or not football players should be able to protest before games.
The controversies originally escalated when President Trump released a harsh truth saying that NFL players should not be allowed to kneel during the national anthem. A few days later, dozens of NFL players retaliated by protesting.
Since then, tensions have been growing. When Goodell released his recent statement about the protests, supporters of the national anthem could feel some amount of victory.
Goodell noted that America is a divided country and that the purpose of sports should be to unite people. He said that while players do technically have the right to protest, football games are not the best place to do it.
He said that “everyone should stand for the National Anthem” and that players and fans should all honor the flag and the country together.
He said, “Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem. It is an important moment in our game. We want to honor our flag and our country, and our fans expect that of us. We also care deeply about our players and respect their opinions and concerns about critical social issues.”
Rather than just leaving players angry, Goodell admitted that he is working to find a compromise. He said that he wants players to be able to respectfully share their opinions in a more constructive way.
On Wednesday morning, President Trump tweeted about Goodell’s statement. After a long battle, President Trump said that it is “about time” that this statement was released.
He said, “It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our National Anthem- RESPECT OUR COUNTRY.”
