A brutal attack on a Paris police van has left one police officer shot to death and seriously wounded two more on Thursday.
According to CNN, the suspected gunman stopped his car in front of the van on the famous Champs-Élysées avenue and opened fire on the police with an automatic weapon.
The attacker was killed when police returned fire.
Earlier mainstream media reports said two officers had been killed, but according to Reuters, the French Interior Minister said only one officer was dead.
During a joint press conference with the Italian prime minister Thursday afternoon, President Trump linked the incident to terrorism, according to The Hill.
“Our condolences from our country to the people of France,” Trump began. “Again, it is happening again seems. I just saw it as I was walking in, so that's a terrible thing. It is a very, very terrible thing that's going on in the world today but it looks like another terrorist attack.”
He added, “What can you say? It just never ends. We have to be strong and we have to be vigilant and I have been saying it for a long time.”
French authorities have not said if the incident is linked to Islamic terrorism or not, but an anti-terror investigation has been opened.
The location of the shooting, the Champs-Élysées, is not insignificant. It is an iconic avenue in Paris framed by the Arc de Triomphe. It has a deep historical and cultural significance in a country beset by multiple Islamic terror attacks over the past few years.
