President Trump ‘Deeply Saddened’ Over the Loss of a Legend

Liu Xiaobo, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, sadly passed away at age 61 on Thursday, July 13th of 2017. According to the New York Times, it was discovered that he had liver cancer in June of 2016 and was in the process of being treated prior to his passing.

Shortly before his death, he was in the midst of serving an 11-year prison sentence. He had received multiple other prison sentences before, which were all related to his advocating for human rights and democracy. He was released on medical parole after he became ill.

While in jail, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010. New York Times previously reported he received the award for ‘his heroic and nonviolent struggles on behalf of democracy and human rights.’

After his passing, the White House released a statement, where President Trump and the administration expressed their condolences. Sean Spicer shared the press release on Twitter, which begins, “President Donald J. Trump was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent Chinese political prisoner Liu Xiaobo.”
