Please pray for the families of police officers killed and for those officers and civilians injured in a massive attack that specifically targeted them in Dallas late last night and early this morning.
According to NBC News, five officers were killed and seven were injured — along with two civilians — when a man, claiming to be motivated by Black Lives Matter and recent shootings involving police officers and black men, opened fire on them. And he was not the only one. Authorities believe at least two snipers were involved.
In a news conference, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said, "We believe that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area, and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could.”
He also said the key suspect told hostage negotiators he "wanted to kill white people, especially white officers.”
That suspect died after police surrounded him in a parking garage at El Centro Community College and killed with a bomb robot after an exchange of gunfire. The suspect claimed there were bombs planted all over the area.
The shooting occurred during a large demonstration in protest of recent police officer shootings of black men Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. Police are still looking for the other suspect or suspects.
Chief Brown expressed dismay with the growing tide of opinions against police officers, saying, “We’re hurting. Our profession is hurting, Dallas officers are hurting. We don’t feel much support most days. Let’s not make today most days.”
A Dallas Morning News photo showed officers using their own bodies to shield protesters from gunfire.
