A local Oklahoma police union from Tulsa recently sparked a major controversy following the Las Vegas massacre, which sadly took the lives of at least 58 people and injured more than 515 others at a country music festival. On October 2nd, the day after the shooting occurred, the police’s social media accounts posted a meme that upset some people.

The post, which was reportedly intended to thank police officers for their response to the Vegas attack, took a shot at NFL players. The meme referenced to the recent protests taking place in the NFL, where hundreds of players are refusing to stand for the national anthem.

The protests follow former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s actions in supporting Black Lives Matter values, but the kneeling quickly became an anti-Trump movement after the president suggested players should be fired for disrespecting the flag. This police department clearly was not happy with the actions of these NFL stars.

The meme read, “To the brave NFL players that ran into a hotel with an active sniper…Nevermind, those were police officers.”

Tulsa police also wrote a comment above the original post, “When tragedy strikes, first responders do truly remarkable things. #backtheblue.”

Their post went viral on Facebook with over 3,000 reactions and over 1,000 shares. Conservatives praised the police union’s statement in agreement. However, the post has now been removed from their page after several followers took offense to it.

According to Fox News, the president of Tulsa’s Fraternal Order of Police released the following statement, “The meme surfaced after several weeks of discussion on social media about the negative issue with NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem. We were only showcasing the heroic acts of our Brothers and Sisters in Las Vegas.”

Despite the post being deleted from the Facebook page, the image is still circulating social media. See a few of the posts below.
