One of the best nights of the entire year is New Year's Eve. Across the globe, millions gather to celebrate the occasion and ring in the New Year.

In recent memory, New Year's Eve celebrations have become targets for potential terror attacks. Now, police are confirming they have just spoiled a terrifying plot in a major city.

According to officials, Australian detectives and police have just arrested a terrorist for plotting to carry out a deadly attack in Melbourne, Australia. Ali Khalif Shir Ali is said to have plotted to use a machine gun to shoot and kill as many people as possible on December 31, 2017.

The arrest comes just weeks after Stephen Paddock opened fire on innocent concertgoers in Las Vegas. In Australia, their New Year's Eve celebration in Melbourne draws over 500,000 people.

“This is a person who would become particularly energized, for a lack of a better word, when overseas [terrorism] events occurred and would express a great deal of interest in committing an attack himself,” officials said.
