Indianapolis Metropolitan Police motorcycle officer Robert Turner was escorting President Trump back to the airport after a speech when things suddenly took a nasty turn. Due to circumstances not yet released, Turner went down hard while driving westbound on I-70 Wednesday.
A heart-wrenching photograph moments after the crash showed the officer lying on the ground in pain. Some people questioned why the Agence France-Presse photographer who shot the photo, according to the UK’s Daily Mail, stood back to photograph the officer rather than immediately coming to his aid.
Turner was taken to the hospital where it was determined he had a broken ankle and possible contusions from flying off the bike, according to the Indy Star. When Trump arrived at the airport, he spoke with the other officers who were part of the police escort and asked how Turner was doing.
Once on Air Force One, Trump delayed take-off so he could give Turner a phone call and check on his condition. The Indianapolis Police posted Turner’s side of the conversation on Facebook:
Turner, wearing a neck brace, was conscious and appeared to be in good condition, laughing at something the president said and telling him, “Thank you, sir, I appreciate it.”
The police department praised Trump’s actions on Facebook:
The feedback on Facebook came quickly:
Linda Earl wrote, “I'm a Republican, didn't vote last year because I didn't like either candidate. (First time I have missed an election since 1976.) BUT NOW MR. TRUMP HAS WON ME OVER!”
“Great Job and thank you Mr.. President ignorant haters going to hate no matter what you do. In 30 years of law enforcement worked on a few Presidential Details. You can tell who cares and who doesn't. I believe current one cares,” wrote Randy Seipel.
Michelle Ulrich Ward replied, “Those of us who are proud parents of law enforcement officers are grateful to have a president who actually supports them. Didn't have that Jan. 2009-Jan. 2017.”
“I don’t care if you voted for or didn’t vote for President Trump. That’s a class move,” Tom Green said.
