Elvis Presley - A Star Who Served

Elvis was drafted into the Army in early 1957 but was able to defer basic training until 1958 to finish filming King Creole.  At this time Elvis, only 22, was already a superstar.  He was offered a chance to join the “Special Services” and travel around entertaining the troops while living in better housing.  He declined any further special treatment and enlisted as a regular soldier.  He even donated his Army pay to charity.

Elvis completed basic training at Ft. Hood in Texas and was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division.  He was then transferred over to the 3rd Armored Division which was stationed in Friedburg, Germany.  He met his future wife Priscilla while stationed in Germany and they would marry seven years later.  He was honorably discharged in 1960 after serving 18 months in Germany and having attained the rank of Sergeant.
