On Sunday morning, September 24th, a tragic shooting occurred at a local Tennessee church. Towards the end of one of the services at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, the masked shooter, who has been identified as Emanuel K. Samson and was reportedly a former member of the church, opened fire with his pistol.
Samson is only 25 years old, but has a history of suspicious and violent activity. According to NBC News, he previously threatened suicide and has reportedly been involved in domestic violence situations with his ex-girlfriend. He was arrested on sight and has been charged with first-degree murder, risking other serious charges to be filed against him.
One woman was killed by Samson on scene in the church parking lot and at least half a dozen other church members were injured, including Pastor Joey Spann reported CBN News. This incident was referred to as a “terrible tragedy” by authorities and government leaders.
Fortunately, police officers arrived quickly in response. In addition, the shooting was stopped by one of the church ushers, who was only 22 years old. Many called the young man a “hero” and believe if it weren’t for him, there would have been a much higher death toll and a massive increase in injuries.
Spann spoke out following the shooting on Wednesday, September 27th. During questioning, he explained what happened from his perspective, informing the public that he tried to stop the gunman, but was shot, and truly thought he was going to die from the bullet wound.
Spann also revealed how heartbreaking it was to have his wife be there in the building during this time, but he was unable to physically get to her in the midst of the chaos. She was also shot; it is unclear what her current condition is, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.
As a man of faith, he stated he was “thankful” to be alive and this tragic situation has not damaged his faith or trust in God. He continued, "If I had the opportunity to talk to [Samson], I would. And I would try to help him."
