Otto Warmbier, the U.S. student who was held captive by North Korea, tragically died earlier this year after being freed back home to America. Upon his return, the young man was in a coma and it was clear that he suffered immensely at the hands of North Korea.
Despite the evidence, there were still many unanswered questions regarding Warmbier’s death and his parents were left extremely heartbroken. However, the coroner’s report, which was obtained by People on Wednesday, revealed new and terrifying details.
According to the report, Warmbier’s official cause of death was cited as “brain damage from a lack of oxygen from an unknown injury more than a year prior to death,” but the manner of his death was “undetermined.” Since his parents declined an autopsy, there was limited room to discover more information.
This news comes shortly after Warmbier’s parents fired back at North Korea during an interview with Fox News. His parents compared the communist country to terrorists and revealed that although they had hope for their son to heal after his return, they soon figured out he was brutally tortured even more so than they expected.
However, the report also stated his teeth were in fine condition, which goes against the earlier statement released by his parents. Apparently, Warmbier’s family had reason to suspect that “someone had taken a pair of pliers and rearranged his bottom teeth.”
Additionally, People stated that his body was described as “well-developed” and “well-nourished.” Although, “a collection of scars” were found on his body, some older and some more recent. It is unclear exactly what caused the scars, but still to this day, the U.S. has not been able to get in contact with North Korean medical authorities to determine Warmbier’s health while he was overseas.
Prior to his death, he was serving a harsh, 15-year prison sentence for stealing a political propaganda poster from his hotel room. He was also penalized with "hard labor."
Please continue to pray for Otto Warmbier’s family during this difficult time. In other breaking news, the head coach of a major sports team was fired following an FBI investigation.
