What Oprah Just Said About Trump is Making the Internet Go Wild

Oprah Winfrey must think she’d be a better president than President Trump because she just hinted she might run in 2020. There’s been talk of Oprah running in the past, and she just stoked the coals of the rumor by retweeting an op-ed by John Podhoretz.

In his op-ed for the New York Post, Podhoretz called for Oprah to run for president. He also called her the best hope of the Democratic Party.

“Thanks for your VOTE of confidence!” wrote Winfrey when she retweeted his article.

In the article, Podhoretz said is the “best hope” Winfrey because she is the “mirror image” of Trump: a black, female, liberal, who made her $3 billion fortune herself "without controversy."

He also thinks that she has potential because she could gather the populist vote. He rejects the idea that a regular politician can capture the American mind.

“The idea that a relatively conventional elected official will differentiate herself from Trump by dint of her seriousness or that an unconventional elected official can out-populist Trump is crazy,” wrote Podhoretz.

“She’s America’s generous aunt, and he’s America’s crazy uncle,” he adds, further comparing Oprah and Trump.

Podhoretz also connects Oprah with Obama’s 2008 win. He says that Obama’s campaign was flagging in 2007 before Oprah’s endorsement provided the “initial accelerant that took him from 25 points back to winning the nomination.”

He goes as far as to cite a 2008 study from the University of Maryland, which suggested that Winfrey brought in more than 1 million votes for Obama.

“[This] suggests he might not have prevailed had she not campaigned on his behalf,” he added meaningfully.

The internet is going wild, but most people think it’s an awful idea. Even fans of Oprah would prefer someone with political experience.

Other people seemed focused on the “niceness” that Oprah could bring to the White House.

Still, the majority of the internet echoes this person. Podhoretz seemed to think that a career politician couldn’t unseat President Trump, but Democrats have spoken and apparently, they want someone with experience for the White House in 2020.
