Over the last several weeks, Americans across the country have been questioning whether or not Oprah Winfrey would run for president in 2020. Now, with the hashtag #Oprah2020 going viral on several social media channels, the talk show host has finally broken the silence.
Fans initially suspected that Oprah would run for president after her dramatic speech at the 75th Golden Globe Award Ceremony. The theme amongst the stars was “Time’s Up,” lining up with the #MeToo movement.
At the ceremony, Oprah was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille award, becoming the first black woman to ever receive the award. What fans were talking about wasn’t the award itself, however, but rather the speech that she made upon receiving it.
Oprah talked about her life experiences, various pioneers who have made an impact in our country, the #MeToo movement, and how there was a change coming for women in America. Then, she said one simple statement that caused much speculation about a presidential run.
She said, “So I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is…on…the…horizon.” While saying those last four words, she paused dramatically in between and fist punched the air, a common politician movement.
Because of her speech, many people believed that Oprah was admitting that she would run for president. President Trump had said in previous interviews that he would have loved to have the talk show host as his running mate, but she would be running against him if she sought a 2020 bid.
Last week, an early poll showed the favor that some Americans had for Oprah, causing some conservatives to grow wary. Now, however, Oprah has denied that she is looking into a 2020 run.
On Thursday morning, the 63-year-old was in an interview with InStyle editor-in-chief Laura Brown.
On the 2020 run, Oprah said, “I’ve always felt very secure and confident with myself in knowing what I could do and what I could not do. And so it’s not something that interests me. I don’t have the DNA for it…That’s not me.”
Of course, Oprah could always change her mind. For now, though, she does not have her sights set on a 2020 run. What do you think about that? Let us know! In other recent news, an actor from a popular kid's show just died at 52.
