President Barack Obama has just set a new record in his presidency for the 20th and 21st centuries.
According to Fox News, he has commuted the sentences of 214 federal prisoners, making it the most sentences commuted in one day by a president since 1900. The majority of the sentences are for non-violence drug crimes, but 67 of them are life sentences.
On Twitter, the White House proudly announced that Obama has now commuted 562 sentences, which is more than the past 9 presidents combined.
White House counsel Neil Eggleston says the president is trying to send a message.
"All of the individuals receiving commutation today — incarcerated under outdated and unduly harsh sentencing laws — embody the president's belief that 'America is a nation of second chances,"' Eggleston said.
