On Tuesday, October 31st, eight people were tragically killed and at least a dozen others were injured in a New York City terrorist attack. The 29-year-old suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, plowed through a crowd of pedestrians along a bike path with a Home Depot rental truck and shouted “Allahu akbar” when storming out of the vehicle.

The suspect has been linked to ISIS. According to the Washington Post, he had been planning the attack for weeks in the name of the Islamic State, inspired by their “values” and previous acts of terrorism.

The attacker reportedly planned to die during the incident, but was only injured by a police officer before being taken into custody. Currently, he is in the hospital recovering from surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, reported CNN.

According to CBS News, Saipov commented on the terror attack while still in the hospital, pleased with the destruction and devastation he caused. Saipov was “unapologetic” and assured he would have continued murdering pedestrians if he wasn’t stopped by authorities.

CBS also stated that nearly a dozen pieces of paper belonging to Saipov were discovered. The notes contained Arabic writing, which praised the actions of Islamic terrorists. One stated, “ISIS will endure.”

Saipov legally came to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2010. He is a husband and father of three children. Up until this point, there was nothing suspicious about Saipov that suggested he was involved or interested in terrorism.

During the investigation, several knives were found in and around the truck, confirming the attacker’s statement that he would have continued out his sick actions. That being said, our nation is very grateful for the officers who were able to stop the attacker in a timely manner.
