On Monday morning, North Korea's foreign minister made an inflammatory statement: he claimed the United States had already declared war on North Korea. Because the United States had already declared war, he said North Korea would be justified in retaliating, reported NBC News.

"Since the U.S. declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down the U.S. bombers even when they are not yet inside the airspace border of our country," Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in New York.

How did the United States declare war? The foreign minister seems to think it happened through a tweet by President Trump.

“Last weekend, Trump claimed that our leadership wouldn't be around much longer and he declared a war on our country," said Ri Yong Ho, “Even the fact that this comes from someone who is currently holding the seat of the U.S. presidency is clearly a declaration of war."

This minister refers to a tweet sent by President Trump on Saturday evening. The president was responding to a speech given by the foreign minister at the U.N.

“Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!”

Both the Communist country and the United States have traded fiery rhetoric lately. An uptick in the interchanges happened when President Trump was elected.

Kim’s officials have routinely threatened to destroy the United States with "a sea of fire" and to reduce "the whole of the U.S. mainland to ruins." Likewise, President Trump has threatened to bring "fire" and "fury" down upon the country if they threatened the United States.

Along with fiery rhetoric, North Korea has also been actively developing a nuclear program. They’ve also tested their weapons several times in the past few months. They’re quite clearly gearing up for something, or at least hoping to intimidate the United States and her allies, Japan and South Korea.

What do you think about this latest development? Do you think this will lead to an escalation of the conflict between the United States and North Korea? Let us know in the comments.
