The 2017 NFL season has been in the midst of a major controversy regarding hundreds of professional football players protesting during the national anthem. Although the protesting began with former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 as a way to protest police brutality and racial inequality, the kneeling has become another anti-Trump movement.
After President Trump suggested that all players who kneel during the anthem should be fired with a controversial statement—in agreement with many other Americans, the number of participants to take a knee during the “Star Spangled Banner” drastically increased. Since then, the nation has been divided on whether this is an appropriate time to exercise their First Amendment rights, since it appears as a “disrespectful” gesture to our flag and our country.
Recently, Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, spoke out about the players' form of protesting. Ultimately, Goodell believes that “everyone should stand for the National Anthem” and hopes to determine a solution—proud Americans felt a small form of victory, including President Donald Trump.
Following Goodell’s remarks, the NFL and NFL Players Association met on Tuesday, October 17th. The organizations released a joint statement to reveal the conclusion of the meeting:
“Today owners and players had a productive meeting focused on how we can work together to promote positive social change and address inequality in our communities...We agreed that these are common issues and pledged to meet again to continue this work together.”
In the statement, the organizations reiterated that all NFL members have a “tremendous respect for our country, our flag, our anthem and our military.” Because of this, they are “coming together to find common ground.”

An official solution has not been determined, so currently, it is unclear if players will be penalized for not standing during the national anthem. Recently, one star player stated that if they were forced to stand, he would be “done with football.”
