Names of God: ELOHIM

This Hebrew name for God, used in the first sentence of the Bible, gives us a clue about the Trinity!

There's an amazing nuance in this biblical name for God that English versions can't easily show. Elohim is the plural version of "El" and "Eloah". Identifying the "gods" of the pagan nations, Exodus 20:3 uses the word elohim, "You shall have no other gods before me." But the Bible also uses it as a name for God, treating it as grammatically singular! Evangelical theologians believe this could point to three persons of the Trinity being one God.

This is the name of God the Bible uses when the beginning of all creation is spoken into existence. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

Deuteronomy 10:17 uses this name to identify Yahweh as "God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes." The name Elohim should bring us to humble submission before the glorious and powerful Lord of all.
