Muna Jama is a first-time competitor in the Miss Universe competition. While most people had never heard of her before, she has become instantly famous for what she wore during the swimsuit portion of the competition.

Jama is a 28-year-old Muslim woman from London, England. She recently opened up about her faith and how wearing a bikini would go against her religious beliefs.

So, while other girls strutted onto the stage in bikinis, Jama decided to do it her own way. Instead of a revealing bikini, Jama wore a kaftan. A kaftan is a long and loose fitting dress.

"It's important for people to speak out," Jama told TODAY Style. "I'm not saying that you'll always receive the answer that you want to hear, but it's important that you're heard and you stand for what you believe in."

Mama said she wore the kaftan after talking with the organizers of the pageant. She said she wouldn’t wear a bikini to the beach, so she’s not going to wear one in a competition to score points.

“It takes bravery, emotional resilience and most importantly surrounding yourself with strong minded people who are prepared to make great sacrifices to welcome permanent and positive change. I may not be able to unwrite a moment in my life but I know a moment will never define me. I will always rise above your expectations and pushed past your limitations. You are what you say you are, and your imaginations can be your worst enemy unless you overcome your fears,” Jama wrote on social media.

“Be careful of what you think of others because it's a reflection of what you are. Work at being a better person, and one day we can welcome a better World. . . This moment has proved that I am capable of almost anything I set my mind to and limitations is a status waiting to be changed. I thank everyone who stood beside me and believed in my vision,” she concluded.

Fans and fellow contestants took to social media to speak out in support of her decision. While Mama did not win the competition, she was proud of the way she represented herself.
