For some career politicians, it’s nearly impossible for them to separate politics from other aspects of their lives. That may be the case with U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) after she launched into a bizarre rant during a eulogy she was giving at a friend’s funeral.
Thousands of people were in attendance at City of Praise Family Ministries church near Washington, D.C. to honor the life of comedian Dick Gregory, who died last month at the age of 84, according to The Root. Aside from telling jokes, Gregory was also a civil rights activist, taking a public stand during the Jim Crow era and joining the black power movement.
He continued to be an activist throughout his life and was involved in the investigation into Martin Luther King Jr’s murder and the negotiations during the Iran hostage crisis. Highly critical of the U.S. itself, he once called America, "the most dishonest, ungodly, unspiritual nation that ever existed in the history of the planet.”
At the funeral, his son claimed Gregory died from a hunger strike — a protest method he commonly employed — and not simply from heart failure as has been reported. The service included a 45-minute eulogy from Louis Farrakhan, and the program booklet had letters from President Obama and the NAACP.
Waters herself was given three minutes to speak but decided to go much longer and turn the service into a political rally, according to The American Mirror. After addressing DACA, she launched into a vicious tirade against President Trump.
‘I’m cleaning out the White House,” she declared to a cheering crowd. “We’re going to sanitize the White House!”
“We’re not going to take what is happening in this country. Haven’t you taken enough?” she asked. “And then comes along this person — this person who does not respect you, this dishonorable human being who cheats everybody. This dishonorable human being who will lie at the drop of a hat. This dishonorable human being who had the Alt-right and the KKK and everybody else inside his cabinet. This dishonorable human being who can criticize everybody but Putin and Russia.”
“Not only are we going to clean out the White House, we’re going to take back the house that slaves built,” she proclaimed later in her speech.
Then Waters made another political move, saying, “And I know, even my colleagues get very upset — some get afraid — when I say ‘impeachment.’ When I get through with Donald Trump, he’s going to wish he had been impeached. I feel it very deeply. I am so offended by him, and I love my people so much, that I am not going to put up with it. I’m going to say ‘impeach 45’ every day.”
