This is bizarre.
Multiple law enforcement agencies rushed to the scene and area businesses went into lockdown as police received 1 911 call of an active shooter at a Bourbonnais, Illinois Target. What they found? A man standing outside the store protesting Target's new policy, which allows anyone to use any bathroom or fitting room that matches their self-determined "gender identity" regardless of their biological sex.
According to NBC Chicago, Michael Merichko was arrested without incident. Police discovered no shots had been fired, nobody had been injured, and there was no indication that Merichko had ever had a gun on his person.
According to the Chicago Tribune, police arrested Merichko, though, because, according to spokesman Lt. Mike Johnston, he “caused a disturbance inside” the store and "provoked a breach of the peace causing panic among store employees and customers,” but there is “no reason to believe he threatened anyone."
Police say they're trying to figure out why Merichko's protest was called in as an "active shooter" in the first place.
Numerous videos have appeared on YouTube over the past two weeks of people — usually very peacefully — confronting Target employees and managers to get them to publicly acknowledge the details of Target's new bathroom and fitting room policy, which has sparked concern among many people that the store's intentions of catering to transgender customers and employees puts women and young girls in danger of male predators. Target employees and managers have confirmed on camera that they can not question any man's "gender identity" — even if he's dressed as a man and has never identified as a woman previously — before he enters a woman's restroom.
