When President Trump was elected last November, the administration's transition team was determined to create a space for open dialogue. Many liberals became extremely upset about some of the dialogue that took place, including that between President Trump and TV host Steve Harvey.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Harvey opened up about what he is working on with the Trump administration and the backlash that he has received for it. While he admitted that he did not vote for the current president, he said that he was willing to work together to see the success of the country.

The meeting between Harvey and President Trump that took place earlier in the year was a result of the two White House administrations admitting that it would be good to encourage dialogue. The Obama team contacted Harvey, asking if he would be interested in meeting with the newly elected president during the transition.

During their meeting, Harvey said, "Mr. President, I'm going to be honest with you, I didn't vote for you...but now that you're here, you're the 45th president and I'm going to help you."

Harvey told President Trump that he holds authority in many cities around the U.S. and can find out direct needs. He said that if he were connected with Ben Carson, the head of Housing and Urban Development, he could help out. Minutes later, Trump had Carson on the phone.

Harvey said, "Why don't we take those schools that are closing, put some HUD money in them, and reopen them as vision centers and teach STEM and computers and coding?"

Since then, Harvey has met with Dr. Carson and they are working on getting the project started. He said that finalizations should hopefully be made by the end of the year.

When asked about his meeting, Harvey's first response was that he never saw the negativity coming. He said that he almost wished he had never taken the meeting because of the initial backlash.

He said, "It was so vicious that it really threw me. I was being called names that I've never been called: Uncle Tom. A coon. A sellout. Because I went to see this man?!"

Despite the negativity surrounding the partnership, Harvey and President Trump were able to find a mutual concern in the U.S. and are now working together to find a solution.
