On Tuesday, October 31st, eight people were tragically killed and at least a dozen others were injured in a New York City terrorist attack. The 29-year-old suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, plowed through a crowd of pedestrians along a bike path with a Home Depot rental truck and shouted “Allahu akbar” while storming out of the vehicle.
Previous information revealed that the suspect had been planning out the attack for weeks in the name of the Islamic State, inspired by their “values” and previous acts of terrorism. According to CNN, almost 100 videos and nearly 4,000 photos of ISIS propaganda were found on his cell phone.
Saipov did not plan to survive the attack, but since he did, he told authorities that he was proud of his actions and would have continued to murder people if he wasn’t stopped by police officers. His sick act-of-terrorism caused a great amount of devastation throughout our nation, especially for the family and friends of the eight victims.
He is currently facing federal terror charges.
On Thursday, CNN reported that ISIS responded to Tuesday’s attack, calling Saipov an “ISIS soldier.” Their main media source stated, "One of the Islamic State soldiers in America attacked on Tuesday a number of crusaders on a street in New York City."
However, the article did not name the attacker and it contained no evidence of having prior knowledge of the attack. In the past, ISIS has been believed to claim responsibility for attacks that may have actually not been directly linked to their organization.
President Donald Trump commented on ISIS’s response Friday morning. On Twitter, he insisted, “[ISIS] will pay a big price for every attack on us!” This comes shortly after Trump previously called for the death penalty.
Please continue to pray for the victims and families affected by this tragedy. In other recent news, an 11-year-old girl tragically took her own life.
