Former presidents George H.W. Bush and his son George W. Bush have harsh words to say against Republican President Donald Trump. The younger son said bluntly, “This guy doesn’t know what it means to be president,” while his father has simply called him a “blowhard.”

A blowhard is “an exceptionally boastful and talkative person,” according to Dictionary.com. The two presidents said this and more in their upcoming book by historian Mark Updegrove, titled “The Last Republicans,” set to be released on November 14.

Bush Senior, now 93, spoke to Updegrove in May 2016, during the election year, offering insight to the emerging presidential candidate who was, surprisingly, becoming a viable influencer in the Republican primary race, “I don’t like him. I don’t know much about him, but I know he’s a blowhard. And I’m not too excited about him being a leader.”

H.W. Bush added that he thought Trump could unite the country under his leadership, but to do so would require “humility,” which Bush acknowledged was a challenge for Trump.

Updegrove, in an interview with CNN’s Jamie Gangel about his biography, said, “If you look at the Bush family, it makes perfect sense. Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not. George Bush grew up thinking about the greater good. Donald Trump is manifestly narcissistic. It’s part of his brand. And that brand is the antithesis of the Bush brand.”

The younger Bush added, “As you know from looking at my family, (humility) is a certain heritage. That’s what they expect, and we’re not seeing that (in Trump).”

Updegrove later told CNN’s Gangel, “When Donald Trump said, ‘I am my own adviser,’ Bush thought – and this is a quote – ‘Wow, this guy doesn’t know what it means to be president.’”

The biography also reveals that both Bush presidents did not vote for Trump. Bush Senior voted for Hillary, while Bush Junior simply left that part of the ballot blank: “I voted ‘None of the Above’ for president, and Republican down the ballot in 2016,” he said.

In the book, Updegrove strove to convey as accurately as he could the relationship between the Bush’s, which he said repeatedly was “very close,” and in describing the first father-son presidential duo in more than 150 years, he said was “a complicated love story, but a love story nonetheless.”
