Hurricane Irma Was So Strong That It Did This Crazy Thing to The Ocean

What would you think if you walked out to the beach and saw all of the water was gone? That's happened to one young woman in Long Island, Bahamas.

She posted a video of the dry beach and the dock, which showed how far the water usually came up on the coastline. The woman, a Twitter user called @Kaydi_K, shared the video Saturday afternoon.

“I am in disbelief right now…” she wrote. “This is Long Island, Bahamas and the ocean water is missing!!!”

Of course, in our skeptical age, the first thought that came to mind was that there hadn't been water at this beach for a while, and she was just trying to take advantage of the Hurricane Irma Buzz.

But a meteorologist for The Washington Post reported otherwise. The meteorologist, Angela Fritz, who is an atmospheric scientist and The Post's deputy weather editor, explained the phenomena.

"I knew right away that even though it looked like it couldn’t be possible, it was absolutely legit," she wrote.

She continued, "As a meteorologist, there are things you learn in text books that you may never see in person... This is one of those things — a hurricane strong enough to change the shape of an ocean."

The lack of water can be explained pretty simply: "Hurricane Irma is so strong and its pressure is so low, it’s sucking water from its surroundings into the core of the storm," said Fritz.

This may be because the wind is blowing the water towards the hurricane away from the shoreline. The other explanation is that the the hurricane has extremely low pressure in the center, creating a suck motion that pulls in air and water.

"As the storm draws water toward the center, it gets pulled away from the surroundings," added Fritz.
