In August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas coast, ultimately leading to massive destruction and devastation among Texas citizens. The highly intense hurricane took the lives of more than 80 people in the United States alone and also destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, vehicles and other properties in Houston and surrounding areas.

Thankfully, there was a silver lining in the midst of this horrible tragedy—the American people came together to support Texas. Dozens of celebrities joined in donating thousands (and some even millions) of dollars to organizations assisting hurricane relief efforts, President Trump and other well-known names visited Texas personally to volunteer their time, and people from near and afar prayed for those suffering.

As time goes on, people are still contributing, in whatever way they can, to help those who have been affected by Harvey. In recent news, one rookie quarterback from a professional football team made major headlines for how he spent his first paycheck.

Deshaun Watson, quarterback for the Houston Texans, surprised three cafeteria workers at the team’s home stadium who were drastically impacted by the flooding from the hurricane. He donated his very first game paycheck to the three employees, who reportedly lost their homes and cars.

Watson approached the three women, and stated, “For what y’all do for us, every day, and never complain, I really appreciate y’all. So I wanted to give my first game check to y’all to help y’all out in some type of way...hopefully, that helps...and anything else y’all need, I’m always here to help.”

The ladies tearfully thanked him and ended the sweet moment with some grateful hugs.

Watson's fellow teammate J.J. Watt also made headlines recently for his contributions towards Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Watt started a relief fund, which ended up raising over $37 million. All proceeds will go directly to the victims of the hurricane.

This is Watson’s first season playing in the NFL. Although his professional sports career is just beginning, the 22-year-old quarterback already received multiple awards for his outstanding college football career. Going into this year’s draft, he was ranked as one of the top quarterbacks by several sports media sources.
