The Bible in the book of Matthew talks about wise men from the East coming to see the baby Jesus after He was born. For centuries, Christians have recounted that story.
As the Bible tells it, there were wise men from the East of Israel who saw a star in the heavens that they interpreted as being a sign that the King of the Jews was born. They followed that star and learned from King Herod that the Messiah — the King of the Jews — was to be born in Bethlehem.
They then followed that star until it was over the place where Jesus was. There in Bethlehem they found Jesus and gave him gifts of gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
So how many wise men were there? The Bible doesn't say!
The tradition of three wise men may have grown up because there were three gifts listed in the Bible that the wise men gave to the baby Jesus; if each wise man gave one gift, there would have been 3. But all we really know according to the Bible is that there were more than one. So were there two wise men? Or perhaps 20? We will have to wait until heaven to find out!
