Charlie Gard has captivated people all over the world—from England to Italy to Idaho—with his parent’s battle to get him the chance to receive experimental treatment, as the young child suffers from a rare genetic condition and brain damage. Charlie has captivated some because they can’t bear to see the adorable 11-month-old suffer; others have watched the case with baited breath because of what it says about parental rights and euthanasia.

Charlie Gard’s case has become a controversial situation worldwide as U.K. doctors continue to pursue shutting off the baby’s life support machine. Gard’s parents have been fearlessly fighting against the hospital for their baby’s precious life by pushing for American treatment or, as a last resort, to take their son home to die. However, their wishes continue to be denied.

Following the controversy, people continue to be very emotional in support for the Gard family. On July 22nd of 2017, it was revealed that the hospital’s staff and other patients have even been receiving “abuse.”

London reporter Rachael Venables posted a statement issued from the hospital. In the statement, the hospital expresses their support for Charlie Gard’s family, but states they will not tolerate the verbal abuse their hospital staff and patients have been receiving.

According to the statement, “Staff have received abuse both in the street and online. Thousands of abusive messages have been sent to doctors and nurses whose life’s work is to care for sick children. Many of these messages are menacing, including death threats.”

“Families have been harassed and discomforted while visiting their children, and we have received complaints of unacceptable behavior even within the hospital itself.” Read the full statement below.
