A new study by Open Doors, a Christian ministry, found that global persecution for Christians for their faith has now reached a one time high. The culprit? Islamic fundamentalism.
While our own government seems unwilling even to say the words "Islamic fundamentalism", Christians around the world are being persecuted and killed for their faith. According to Open Doors, 100 million Christians worldwide are suffering some type of persecution, and 7,000 have been killed for their faith in the last year alone.
The 7,000 number is likely far too low due to the difficulty of documenting cases in Muslim countries. As reported by Breitbart News, Lisa Pearce, CEO of Open Doors, said: "The persecution of Christians is getting worse, in every region in which we work -- and it's getting worse fast. The trend is stark, as are the consequences for real people."
The Open Doors report found that persecution was particularly severe in North Korea and also in several countries which are in the Middle East and Africa. The rise of ISIS has led to grievous assaults on Christians in countries like Syria.
Let us pray for persecution to lessen around the world and for governments to protect those who are vulnerable to religious persecution.
