YouTube, popular video-sharing website, has grown rapidly since being founded in 2005. Top videos went from being viewed hundreds of times, to thousands of times, to millions of times. As of 2012, the top videos now have billions of views. Although a variety of types of videos are uploaded to YouTube daily, the most popular category remains as music videos.
Out of the current top 10 list of most watched YouTube videos, only one of them is not a music video. “Masha and the Bear: Recipe for Disaster” holds the number six slot, which shows clips with characters from the kids show “Masha and the Bear.”
The other top nine videos are all music videos. Number 10 is “Roar” by Katy Perry, number 9 is “Sugar” by Maroon 5, number 8 is “Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias, and number 7 is “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift.
The top 5 videos include: “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars at number 5, “Sorry” by Justin Bieber at number 4, “Gangnam Style” by Psy at number 3, and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee at number 2. “Despacito” became popular after the version featuring Justin Bieber was released summer of 2017.
The number 1 video, which has held a spot on the top 10 since 2015 and is currently at 2.98 billion views, is “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. The song holds a special place in the hearts of “Fast and Furious” fans as it is tribute to Paul Walker, the star actor who tragically passed away in a car wreck in 2013.
