Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill expressed, “Based on what we know right now, this was an unprovoked attack against police officers who work to keep this great city safe.”

The Washington Post points out that 135 officers were killed last year, putting law enforcement fatalities at their highest level in five years. Officers sometimes get killed unintentionally, but last year saw a trend of anti-police assassinations and assassination attempts.

Bonds was on parole after being in jail seven years for robbery. He also got in trouble in 2001 for beating up a police officer in Queens with brass knuckles, according to the New York Post. He also posted a video of his anti-police tirade last year.

“Police is [expletive] and this isn’t no gimmick…Don’t think every brother, cousin, uncle you got that gets killed in jail is because of a Blood or Crip be killing them, no its because police be killing them,” he said in the profanity-laced video.

Familia, meanwhile, leaves behind three children. They were at her bedside when she died, according to Heavy.

Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick J. Lynch released a heartbreaking statement about Familia, saying, “Police officer Miosotis Familia, the mother of three, gave her life protecting a neighborhood that had been plagued by gang gun violence. Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform everyday and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx. As we mourn her death and support her family, friends and colleagues, we ask for your help. Violence against police officer cannot stand. When you see or hear someone making threats against NYC police officers you need to let us know, you need to be our eyes and ears. Police officer Familia now joins the exclusive ranks of women who have heroically served and died in the line of duty. We will keep her in our hearts and minds as we do all of the women and men who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the city they loved.”

Please pray for Familia’s family and the innocent bystander who got shot! Pray for the safety of our law enforcement officers!
