Gender Recognition Outlawed in Nebraska Middle School

“Avoid asking kids to line up as boys or girls or separating them by gender,” instructs a document called “12 easy steps on the way to gender inclusiveness.”

A Lincoln, Nebraska middle school is outlawing expressions of gender, reports this Daily Caller article. They are training teachers in a lengthy document on how to not reference gender, teaching them to call children "purple penguins" instead of boys and girls.

The training teaches that gender identity is a "a psychological quality; unlike biological sex, it can’t be observed or measured, only reported by the individual. Like biological sex, it consists of more than two categories, including those who identify as a third gender, two-spirit (both), or agender (neither).”

Many parents are unhappy with this, but Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Steve Joel is determined. When asked how they will deal with unhappy parents, he said, “We’ll meet with anyone who’d like to meet with us. … we have to think about 39,000 students, more than 39,000… there is no one size fits all approach to this. … I don’t believe that this is going to cause us to make any changes.”

The school is using a powerful visual tool called "The Genderbread Person" that illustrates and differentiates things such as biological sexual makeup and attraction. You can see the image here.

Al Riskowski, executive director of the Nebraska Family Alliance, is strongly opposed to the new initiative, saying they go “way beyond trying to teach someone how to respect another individual."

How do you feel? Do you think it is appropriate to teach this in our middle schools?
