Some people joke that the doctor shouldn't pronounce "It's a boy," or "It's a girl" at birth, because everyone should wait for the baby to decide. But now it's not so funny.
A parent in Canada is actually pushing for the government to omit gender from birth certificates, instead completely leaving the field unassigned until the child determines what he or she will be. "Kori Doty gave birth to Searyl Atli at a friend's home last November. Doti, a non-binary trans parent who doesn't identify as either male or female, (and prefers to use the pronoun they), wants to keep Searyl's gender off all official records," shares CBC.
"I'm raising Searyl in such a way that until they have the sense of self and command of vocabulary to tell me who they are, I'm recognizing them as a baby and trying to give them all the love and support to be the most whole person that they can be outside of the restrictions that come with the boy box and the girl box," Doty said.
Franklin Graham, the outspoken voice for Christian values in this post-Christian society, will have none of it. Calling the parent's idea "nonsense," Graham shares that the only way to really discover who you are is through knowing Jesus.
The sad reality is that such a crazy idea is not that far from happening in America. Already, countries like Canada, Australia, and Pakistan are working towards creating passports that have a new gender designation on them. It is not that far-fetched to think that the US will soon do something similar or even apply the idea to driver's licenses, in light of the current moral climate on transgender issues.
