Maria Sharpova is an incredible athlete. She is a five time Grand Slam winner and also the highest paid female athlete in the world. But now many of her top sponsors (including TAG Heuer, Nike, and Porsche) are walking away from her after she failed a drug test in January.
Reuters reports that she tested positive for meldonium, which she has used for a decade to treat low magnesium and diabetes. "The substance, recently banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), boosts blood flow and can enhance athletic performance. Sharapova, who lives in the United States, is at least the seventh athlete in a month to test positive for meldonium. It is widely available in Eastern Europe but not approved for use in the United States."
Many are criticizing her, but Franklin Graham is applauding her response to the suspension in a latest Facebook post.
Serena Williams is standing by her too, saying, "She's ready to take full responsibility and I think that showed a lot of courage and a lot of heart."
