Vice President Pence arrived in Rockport Texas Thursday and quickly got to work clearing debris from a yard where Hurricane Harvey had flattened trees. Donning blue work gloves, he worked up a sweat in the 90-degree heat, at the same time encouraging Texans that America was with them.
“We’re going to stay with you every step until we bring southeast Texas back bigger and better than ever before,” Pence said to the crowd that had gathered at a church blown wide open from the storm.
Pence was joined by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, several Cabinet members, and Energy Secretary Rick Perry, the former governor of Texas.
“The president went to the right place,” said Perry. “He literally and figuratively waved the flag. … The American citizens and Texans know he cares, he’s paying attention.”
Pence was also joined by Reverend Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse, who had come to spearhead an effort to provide relief for the dazed denizens of Rockport. Graham had only kind words to say of Pence’s visit.
The area that Pence surveyed was drastically altered from Harvey’s fury, according to The Washington Post. The roads were essentially impassable from fallen trees, street lamps and power lines, making foot travel the only safe route through the town. Residents had been told that it could be two or three weeks before power is restored. And school openings were delayed until mid-September.
Please pray for the residents in southeast Texas whose lives have been severely altered from Harvey. Countless Americans have risen to the call to provide support for Texas, whether through prayer, volunteer work, or resources. One such person is a famous Hollywood actress who donated $1 million of her own money to relief efforts. What do you think? Join the conversation on our Facebook page.
