A former NFL player, James Hardy III, was found dead in a river in Indiana last month. He was found in the Maumee River just days after his family reported him missing at the end of May.

According to reports, first responders were called to the river on Wednesday after a body was seen in the water. Coroners identified the following day that the body was James Hardy.

Now, officials have ruled Hardy’s death as a suicide. They also reported that his body had been in the river for what appeared like a few days before being discovered. The IndyStar is reporting it as "asphyxia due to drowning."

Hardy had suffered a rough childhood, according to a story from USA Today. Reports say his father spent most of Hardy’s formative years in jail, for selling drugs. His mother struggled to care for him and at one point he was living with an uncle who’d recently been released from jail. Sports helped him turn his life into something positive.

Hardy was a 2nd round pick to the Bills in 2008 after a successful football career at Indiana. He spent 4 years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.

The Buffalo Bills took to Twitter to express their condolences. “Our support is with the Hardy family after the passing of former Bills WR James Hardy,” read the Bills official account.

Please join us in praying for his family and friends during this difficult time. Suicide is a real issue that thousands of people struggle with. If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, please reach out for help via a local counseling center or hospital.
