Prior to the 2016 presidential election, The Daily Mail published false information about First Lady Melania Trump.
The newspaper made allegations implying she was an escort and that her and President Trump lied about how they met.
In response to these false publications, Melania filed a lawsuit against The Daily Mail for spreading rumors.
The Daily Mail responded with a public apology posted on their website:
“We accept that these allegations about Mrs Trump are not true and we retract and withdraw them. We apologise to Mrs Trump for any distress that our publication caused her. To settle Mrs Trump's two lawsuits against us, we have agreed to pay her damages and costs.”
According to Fox News, the First Lady received a reported $2.9 million in damages and legal fees as a part of the settlement.
