“Sound of Music” fans are mourning today as they say goodbye to one of the stars of the show. On Christmas Eve, Heather Menzies-Urich passed away.
Menzies-Urich acted as “Louisa von Trapp” in the popular movie “Sound of Music.” While she acted in several other productions as well, she was best known for role as one of the von Trapp sisters.
Menzies-Urich died on Sunday night. She was 68-years old and had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer just a month ago.
The estate of Rodgers and Hammerstein, the producer of the 1965 musical, confirmed the death via Twitter.
They said, “Heather was part of ‘the family.’ There is really no other way to describe the members of the cast of the movie of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. And of ‘the kids,’ Heather was a cheerful and positive member of the group, always hoping for the next gathering. We are all lucky to have known her, and she will happily live on in that beautiful movie. We will miss her.”
According to Variety, Menzies-Urich continued her career after “Sound of Music” as an actress and a ballerina. She appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows.
Ryan Urich, Heather’s son, opened up about his mother’s death.
He said, “She was an actress, a ballerina and loved living her life to the fullest. She was not in any pain but, nearly four weeks after her diagnosis of terminal brain cancer, she had enough and took her last breath on this earth at 7:22 p.m.”
Kym Karath, who played Louisa’s sister Gretl in the Oscar-winning show, said, “I am filled with infinite sadness tonight. My precious friend and SOM sister Heather Menzies passed away this evening. Devastated.”
The actress’ husband passed away in 2002 at the age of 55. She is survived by three children and several grandchildren.
