Pop star Shawn Mendes was in Mexico City when the earthquake happened, and he wants to help remedy the destruction he saw there. He announced on Friday that, along with the Red Cross, he’s raising funds to do just that, reported Billboard.
Mendes is also hoping to raise awareness. He wants to make sure people in the states are aware that Mexico endured a catastrophic event that caused the deaths of over 200 people. It also left countless without homes.
Mendes was in Mexico City on tour when the earthquake happened. He quickly mobilized to help the people he saw suffering.
“After seeing the impact of the damage firsthand in Mexico, I wanted to find any way I could to raise funds,” said Mendes in a press release. “So we reached out to the Red Cross and partnered with them to set up a way to help those affected by the earthquake.”
The campaign is raising funds via CrowdRise, a crowdsourcing site that’s part of GoFundMe. Mendes got the ball rolling by donating $100,000 to the campaign. He’s counting on fans to help raise more funds.
If you feel called to donate, you can do so here. Your donations will enable relief and support, said Mendes.
