Extreme devastation swept across Puerto Rico as the first Category 4 hurricane in over 80 years made direct landfall last week. Hurricane Maria brought dangerous flooding, a 100% loss of power, and the loss of contact between Puerto Rican citizens and friends and family on US mainland.

One Hollywood celebrity who lost contact with her family on the island is actress and singer Jennifer Lopez. The star took to social media last week to open up about her lack of contact with her loved ones.

Because the devastation was so vast, there is still not an accurate death toll or a complete understanding of how it will affect the future of the island. Some sources are reporting that it will take up to 30 years to completely recover.

When Jennifer Lopez posted about the situation on her Instagram account, she pleaded for her followers to support relief efforts and donate to specific organizations. Now, the actress has practiced what she preached and donated a staggering $1 million to help with relief.

At a press conference on Sunday, Lopez announced her large donation and said that she will be serving as the Co-Chair of the Empire State Relief & Recovery Effort. She will be serving alongside her boyfriend, Alex Rodriguez.

She said, "Alex Rodriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are utilizing all of our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports and business to garner support for Puerto Rican and Caribbean relief efforts."

Lopez will also work with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony. She said that they will be spearheading other relief efforts as well, organizing the Latino community of artists and athletes.

She said, "We have two team planes filled with supplies and generators awaiting air clearance to depart, land and unload these much-needed supplies in San Juan. And I will be donating $1 million from the proceeds of my Las Vegas show to the designated beneficiary charitable and NGO organizations."
