Fire and Black Smoke Erupt in Manhole on New York City Street

Thursday afternoon a large manhole fire started on West 72nd Street in Manhattan, NYC near a subway station.

There was black smoke coming out of the manhole after what appears to be an explosion. At this time, no statement has been made about how this happened.

The streets surrounding the area have been shut down while authorities contain the smoke. New Yorkers are posting about it all over social media warning their fellow commuters about road closures.

The New York Fire Department is working on containing the smoke and it is under control. As far as subway commuters go, the New York City Subway said, “At this time that manhole fire has no effect to service.” There are no injuries to report.
