A heartbreaking story has just emerged after another child has been killed from a falling dresser. Jozef Dudek died after a dresser from Ikea fell over on him as he slept.
Dudek is the 8th child to be killed by Ikea’s dressers as they tip over. The dressers were recalled a year ago, however, some are still being used.
“Two-year-old Jozef Dudek of California was killed when a three-drawer Ikea dresser tipped over and crushed him during naptime. The family’s lawyer, Daniel J. Mann of Philadelphia, said the accident happened in May and no one else was in the room,” according to ABC News.
Now, parents of young children are speaking out in an effort to raise awareness about the safety hazards associated with these kinds of dressers. Ikea has recalled them and is offering a refund or a wall anchoring kit for consumers to use.
“Our hearts go out to the affected family, and we offer our sincere condolences during this most difficult time.” The company added that “the initial investigation indicates that the chest involved in this incident had not been properly attached to the wall,” wrote Ikea in a written statement.
29 million dressers have been recalled. They include various sizes and styles. They are all prone to tipping over and could possibly be harmful. At this time, all users should check their dressers and decide if they want a refund or a wall mounting anchor kit.
According to the CPSC, one child dies every two weeks and a child is injured every 24 minutes in the United States from furniture or TVs tipping over on them, reported ABC News.
