The LGBT community advocates tolerance for a variety of lifestyle and value choices. However, no tolerance has been extended to the conservative stars of TLC's hot show "19 Kids and Counting," Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. The Duggars' ideas on sexuality have been publicly criticized. As this Daily Signal article reported, the LGBT community has started a petition to cancel "19 Kids and Counting," to help “end LGBTQ fear mongering by the Duggars.”
In recent months, the Duggars have made various public statements that stand for their traditional, Judeo-Christian values. In August, Michelle Duggar sent out a recorded message to the residents of her Fayetteville, Arkansas district asking them to repeal an anti-gender discrimination ordinance that would allow men to use girl's public restrooms and locker rooms. She felt that it would endanger women and children.
But this message, amongst other actions made by the Duggars (their daughter spoke up against abortion and Michelle deleting pictures posted to the Duggar Facebook page of same-sex couples kissing), elicited a fiery response from the LGBT community.
Many feel this is hypocritical. Trying to silence one person's opinion because it disagrees with another's is the greater form of discrimination. Is the LGBT community guilty of the very discrimination it condemns? "We don't like what you are saying, so we don't want you to have a voice."
But the Duggars are not the only Americans with traditional values, as evidenced by support they have received.
How do you feel about this? Do you think the Duggars should be silenced for their pro-traditional marriage stance? We would love to hear your thoughts!
