Hurricane Maria, which began as a mere tropical storm, quickly escalated into a Category 5 hurricane before making its first landfall on Monday. Late in the evening, Maria struck a Caribbean Island, Dominica, leaving a great deal of devastation.
The Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, released a devastating statement following Maria’s wrath. In his statement, Skerrit reveals the horrid destruction that Maria left in such a short amount of time.
He stated, “Initial reports are of widespread devastation. So far we have lost all what money can buy and replace. My greatest fear for the morning is that we will wake to news of serious physical injury and possible deaths as a result of likely landslides triggered by persistent rains.”
He continued, “So, far the winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with. The roof to my own official residence was among the first to go and this apparently triggered an avalanche of torn away roofs in the city and the countryside.”
Additionally, the Prime Minister reached out for assistance, requesting support from friendly nations and other organizations willing to help. He called the damage “devastating” and “mind-boggling.” Read the full statement below.
According to multiple news outlets, Maria remains as a Category 5 hurricane and is headed for U.S. territories Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands next. Although it is too early to tell, authorities state Maria could eventually glide its way up to U.S. mainland in upcoming days.
Please keep those affected by Hurricane Maria and those still at risk in your prayers. In other breaking news, a Trump family member and a White House officially recently dropped Secret Service protection.
