Enemies of Donald Trump have been dead set on proving that his campaign colluded with the Russian government to get him elected. Indeed, these accusations come in the midst of particularly worrisome tensions between Russia and the United States. Trump must have colluded, his enemies insist despite lack of clear cut evidence.
Now, a watchdog group is filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday alleging that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) solicited opposition research on the Trump campaign from Ukraine.
According to The Hill, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) will allege that political operative Alexandra Chalupa, a DNC consultant, sought intelligence on Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort from Ukrainian officials. In other words, FACT will be claiming this: while the Democrats alleged without clear evidence that Trump colluded with Russia, they themselves may have been colluding with Ukraine. If the complaints end up being true, the irony will be clear to everyone, but the mainstream media will likely make sure not to give the story much coverage.
“Federal law and commission regulations prohibit any person from knowingly soliciting, accepting or receiving contributions or donations of money or other things of value from a foreign nation,” the complaint reads according to The Hill.
FACT alleges that Chalupa violated this ban by soliciting valuable information on a Trump campaign official from a foreign national on behalf of the Democratic Party. Chalupa had supposedly developed a network of sources in Kiev and Washington, including journalists and government officials, and would often share information with the DNC.
Trump’s critics have repeatedly pointed out that Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., met with a Russian lawyer and a Russian-American lobbyist, believing that they might have campaign dirt on opponent Hillary Clinton. Critics of Trump believe that this meeting is evidence that campaign officials colluded with the Russian government.
Ironically, FACT is now turning these allegations on the DNC.
