NFL’s Sunday games took a drastic political turn when a majority of players decided to protest during the national anthem. Although these protests have been making headlines since former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling during the Star Spangled Banner last year, a massive number of players followed on September 24th following President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks.
After Trump suggested that all players who protest the national anthem should be fired, many professional football players and coaches were outraged. However, in the midst of this major controversy, a few players stood their ground and stayed standing for the anthem.
Almost the entire team for the Oakland Raiders sat linking arms at this time of the sporting event, but their star quarterback Derek Carr stayed standing. Carr has been very well-known for being outspoken about his Christian faith and conservative, family values.
Prior to the Raiders’ game against the Washington Redskins, Carr also surprised America with what he did in addition to standing up during our country’s infamous theme song. On Sunday evening, Carr was seen publicly praying with his hand over his heart, while the rest of his team was on the ground.
Conservatives praised his actions, bringing to the attention that instead of creating a division, the quarterback shined a light on God.
