Former Democratic mayor of Passaic, New Jersey (Alex D. Blanco) was sentenced to more than two years in prison on April 18th.
After pleading guilty, Blanco was charged with ‘soliciting and accepting corrupt payments’ of $110,000.
Penalties included Blanco being forced to resign back in 2016, pay back the exact amount he stole, and ultimately three years of supervised release following his 27 month prison sentence.
According to the United States Department of Justice District of New Jersey, Blanco was stealing funds for personal usage that was originally intended to assist poor residents with housing.
A special agent involved in the case stated:
“Today's sentencing of former Passaic Mayor Alex Blanco is indicative of how diligently the FBI and our law enforcement partners work corruption matters. We will continue to investigate allegations of public corruption thoroughly to ensure any person who misuses their public office for private gain is held accountable.”
Prior to his sentencing, Blanco was previously described as the ‘American success story’.
