David A. Clarke Jr., the conservative and controversial Milwaukee County Sheriff, resigned from his office on Thursday, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Clarke, who is also known for wearing a Stetson, gained national prominence with his vocal support of President Trump, and his "no-holds-barred conservative rhetoric." He endorsed Trump when he was running for president, and he's also vocal about his pro-life views.

Clarke was in his fourth term as sheriff when he submitted a resignation letter to Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson on Thursday afternoon. The formal announcement of Clarke's resignation was made by conservative talk show host Mark Belling.

"Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, one of the most important conservative voices on law enforcement and social issues in America and a lightning rod for criticism by Milwaukee liberals, is retiring effective this afternoon," reported Belling.

Belling also recalled that Clarke had mentioned that he would be leaving his position as sheriff for a position in the Trump Administration several months ago, but that never came to fruition. Belling revealed that Clarke told him that he is accepting a new position, but the nature of that position will not be publicized until next week.

"He’s not disclosing what it is, but I can tell you that it is not in government and will give Clarke the latitude to continue to speak out on the causes he is passionate about," said Belling.

Clarke became sheriff when he was appointed by Governor Scott McCallum in 2001. He continued to be re-elected, which was surprising given that he was a conservative running in a Democratic primary.

"He has emerged as one of the most forceful defenders of law enforcement officers in the country. His conservative views on social policy and refusal to back down to media critics who hated his populist message made him a national hero to millions of American conservatives," wrote Belling, who called the opposition to Clarke racism.

Governor Scott Walker will name Clarke’s replacement. The next election for sheriff will take place next year. In other news, read the remarkable thing that President Trump is doing for Harvey victims.
