Hurricanes have destroyed thousands of homes across America in recent weeks. As Houston recovers from Hurricane Harvey, another major storm is threatening people.
Hurricane Irma is heading towards Florida and gaining momentum. People in the area are bracing for the worst and some are even evacuating under mandatory orders.
However, for the people of Puerto Rico, the challenges are just beginning. According to reports, the fallout from the storm could cause power outages for up to six months.
"There are going to be blackouts. Areas that will spend three, four months without electricity," Ricardo Ramos, executive director of Puerto Rico's energy agency, said, according to the Spanish-language news agency EFE.
According to the Miami Herald, the electric company has warned citizens the island could be without power for four to six months. The government in the area has set up numerous shelters in the area and are prepared to house more than 60,0000 people.
As the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico faced dangerous conditions Wednesday, the Dominican Republic is expected to be hit by Hurricane Irma on Thursday.
